Scrappy

From the Kerrville Daily Times:

Motorists heading on Texas 16 north just can't help but notice the latest scenery between Kerrville and Fredericksburg - a 16-foot tall metal deer.

"A lot of people stop and admire it," said local businessman Gene Lehmann. "Or they can't believe it."

Lehmann is well known in Kerrville both for his long-time business partnership in Lehmann and Monroe Enterprises, which developed much of Kerrville south of the river, and his and former partner Gordon Monroe's donations to the community, including the land for the Louise Hays Park.

But Lehmann's latest effort started on "a whim," he said.

"I wanted a big, white buck deer made of scrap metal," Lehmann said. "Because his name's Scrappy."

The monument, which sitting on its base towers more than 25 feet above the highway at the entrance to the Lehmann family property, is named after the Tivy High School mascot, Scrappy, and is dedicated to three generations of the Lehmann family who graduated from that school and Fleet Adm. Chester Nimitz, a Fredericksburg native who graduated from Tivy in 1901.

The sculpture was created by Brett and Tammy Prank of Kadoka, S.D., and is made of various scrap metals including motorcycle gas tanks, chains, barbed wire and car parts.

The deer took a year and a half to complete and was dedicated on the site last month.

Lehmann, who served on the Kerrville school board in the late 1950s and early 1960s, said he considered donating "Scrappy" to the school, but decided instead to place it at the entrance to the family property know as the Dragon Springs Ranch.

Scrappy facts

How the idea came to be: Playing on the Tivy High School mascot's name, local businessman Gene Lehmann "wanted a big, white buck deer made of scrap metal."

How it was made: Listening to Lehmann's advice, Brett and Tammy Prank of Kadoka, S.D., created the deer out of various scrap metals including motorcycle gas tanks, chains, barbed wire and car parts.

How you can see it: Take Texas 16 north to the entrance of the Lehmann family property known as the Dragon Springs Ranch.

90 Seconds from Apline, Texas to disaster!

Time Lapse video created while I was on my way from Alpine, Texas to where the accident with the deer occurred. I have slowed down the last few seconds of the video to show the two frames where the deer appears in the frame. I had the camera set to take a shot every half a second! So things happened VERY quickly!

It is a little difficult to see since the sun was starting to set, but in the first frame where the deer appeared, it is standing on the right side of the road well in front of me next to the guard rail. In the second shot, it was after impact and my camera just happened to slide over to the right side of my dash and was pointing to the front left of my truck. You can just see a part of the deer over the hood as it is tumbling off the left side of the road. :-\

It's not really fair when the deer are like pets, but it sure makes for pretty pictures. We were at a friends lake house in the Texas hill country. There is a herd of deer in the development that people can more or less hand feed. I found it funny that the biggest buck was the boldest of the herd. I'm used to hunting where the bucks are the most skittish.
